A Guide for Children, Teens, Adults, and Families
At Konick and Associates, we understand that pursuing a neuropsychological evaluation can feel both hopeful and overwhelming. Many individuals and families come to us after months—or even years—of trying to understand challenges related to attention, learning, emotional functioning, behavior, executive functioning, social development, or daily life skills.
Our goal is not simply to “test,” but to provide clarity, direction, and compassionate support. A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation is designed to better understand how a person thinks, learns, processes information, regulates emotions, and navigates the world around them. Most importantly, the process is intended to identify strengths alongside areas of difficulty so that meaningful recommendations and supports can be developed.
What Is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?
A neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of cognitive, academic, emotional, behavioral, and adaptive functioning. These evaluations help answer questions such as:
At Konick and Associates, our evaluations are individualized and developmentally informed. We recognize that no two children, teens, or adults present in exactly the same way, and we approach each evaluation with curiosity, collaboration, and respect for the individual’s unique experiences.
Common Reasons Families Seek Testing
Sometimes families are seeking answers after a long period of uncertainty. Other times, they simply want a deeper understanding of how their child or teen learns best. Both are valid reasons to pursue evaluation. Families and individuals may pursue an evaluation for concerns related to:
The Evaluation Process: What to Expect
1. Initial Consultation
The process typically begins with an intake appointment to better understand the concerns bringing you to testing. During this meeting, we gather information about developmental history, educational experiences, emotional functioning, medical history, prior interventions, and current challenges.
For children and teens, parents or caregivers play an important role in helping us understand the broader picture. We may also request permission to review records from schools, physicians, therapists, or previous evaluations when relevant.
This initial step helps us determine the most appropriate evaluation approach and tailor testing to the individual’s needs.
2. Testing Appointments
Testing is usually completed over one or more appointments depending on the referral questions and the scope of the evaluation. During testing, individuals may complete activities involving:
For younger children, testing is designed to be engaging and developmentally appropriate. Many tasks may resemble puzzles, games, or structured activities.
It is common for individuals and families to feel nervous beforehand. Our clinicians work intentionally to create a supportive, affirming, and respectful environment where clients feel comfortable and understood throughout the process.
3. Feedback and Recommendations
After testing is completed, the clinician carefully reviews and integrates all information gathered throughout the evaluation process. This includes standardized test results, clinical observations, interviews, developmental and educational history, rating scales, and collateral information when available. A feedback session is then scheduled to review and discuss:
Recommendations are tailored to the individual’s unique needs and may include:
At Konick and Associates, we believe recommendations should be practical, individualized, and actionable—not simply diagnostic labels on paper. Our goal is to help clients and families leave the process with greater understanding, direction, and confidence moving forward. Families and clients are encouraged to ask questions throughout the feedback process. Clients also receive a comprehensive written report summarizing findings and recommendations in detail.
Understanding Divergent or Conflicting Data
Our clinicians recognize that no single test, questionnaire, or observation tells the full story. Instead, neuropsychological evaluation relies on converging data—the process of examining patterns across multiple sources of information to better understand how cognitive, emotional, behavioral, developmental, academic, and social factors interact.
At times, different pieces of information may appear inconsistent or even contradictory on the surface. For example, a child may demonstrate strong attention and focus during structured one-on-one testing, while parents or teachers report significant struggles with organization, emotional regulation, or task completion in daily life. Inconsistencies in data do not mean that concerns are invalid or that one source of information is “right” while another is “wrong.” Human functioning is complex, and behavior often varies depending on the setting, expectations, stress level, support systems, and demands placed on the individual.
Clinical psychologists are extensively trained to interpret and weigh these different pieces of information within a broader developmental and psychological framework. Rather than relying solely on isolated scores or a single questionnaire, psychologists evaluate patterns across data sources, the consistency and severity of symptoms, clinical observations, developmental history, and how challenges impact real-world functioning over time and across environments.
Our role is not simply to collect data, but to thoughtfully interpret it in context in order to form an individualized clinical understanding. This comprehensive and integrative approach helps ensure that diagnostic impressions and recommendations are clinically meaningful, developmentally informed, and tailored to the unique needs of the individual.
How to Prepare for Testing
There is no need to “study” for a neuropsychological evaluation. The goal is to understand authentic functioning, not performance under perfect conditions. However, the following can help support the evaluation process:
We also encourage families to avoid framing testing as something scary or punitive. Instead, it can be helpful to describe the evaluation as an opportunity to better understand how the brain works and what supports may be helpful.
Understanding Evaluation Results: A Snapshot in Time
One important aspect of neuropsychological assessment is understanding that evaluation results reflect a snapshot in time. Cognitive, emotional, behavioral, academic, and social functioning can change throughout development as individuals mature, gain new skills, experience changes in their environment, or respond to interventions and supports.
Because of this, current evaluation findings may not always fully align with previous assessment results or prior diagnoses. Differences between evaluations can occur for many valid reasons, including:
In some cases, an individual who previously met criteria for a diagnosis may no longer fully meet criteria, while in other situations, challenges may become more apparent as expectations increase with age and development.
It is also important to understand that not every evaluation results in a formal diagnosis. The purpose of assessment is not simply to assign labels, but to better understand an individual’s unique profile of strengths, challenges, learning style, and support needs. Sometimes findings may suggest monitoring concerns over time, implementing targeted supports, or gathering additional information before diagnostic conclusions can be made.
At Konick and Associates, our clinicians take care to explain findings thoroughly and thoughtfully during the feedback process. We believe families and clients deserve clear, collaborative discussions that place results into meaningful developmental and clinical context.
